Chandi Devi Temple Haridwar is located on the top of Nil Parvat on the eastern edge of Shivalik Hill in the Uttarakhand State of India. This temple is dedicated to Maa Chandi Devi a merged avatar of Laxmi, Saraswati, and Durga, the fierce form of Maa Parvati. This Mandir is also known as Nil Parvat Tirtha, one of the five pilgrims of Haridwar. Chandi Devi Temple is one of the most famous pilgrim attraction of Haridwar. Chandi Devi Mandir Haridwar is also known as Sidha Pitha of North India.
History of Chandi Devi Temple Haridwar
Chandi Devi Temple Haridwar was constructed in 1929 by King Suchat Singh of Kashmir. However, it is said that the main statue of Chandi Devi had been installed in the 8th century by Adi Guru Sankaracharya, which was one of the greatest priests of Hindu religion. People who came to Haridwar’s pilgrimage also take blessings of Mother Chandi.
Mythology about Chandi Devi Temple
According to Mythology, when the demon King Shumbha and Nishumbha had captured the kingdom of Devraj Indra of Heaven and drove Devta’s out of heaven. After the deep prayers of the Devta’s, Parvati took the form of Chandi. The Chandi form of Goddess Parvati was very beautiful. After seeing their beauty, Shumbha wishes to marry her. Devi Chandi turned down Shumbha’s marriage proposal, which made Shumbha very angry.
Shumbha sent his two demons Chand and Munda to kill Goddess Chandi. Mother Chandi had done a battle with those two demons. In this battle, these two demons were killed by Maa Chandi Devi. After this Shumbha and Nishumbha, herself tried to kill Ma Chandi, but Chandi kills both of them. After killing them, Goddess Chandi rested on the peak of Nil Mountain for a short time. Later, a temple was built at this place.
Chandi Devi Temple Timings
In normal days, the timing of Chandi Devi Temple is from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Morning aarti timing of Chandi Devi Temple starts at 5:30 am and the evening aarti starts at 7 PM. If you want to go to the temple for the morning Aarti, then you will have to walk to the temple. Because the opening timing of Chandi Devi Ropeway is from 7:00 to 7:30 AM approx.
Carrying leather and non-vegetarian food in the temple premises is prohibited. Leave your leather stuff in your car or hotel where you are staying.
Chandi Devi Temple ropeway Ticket price & Timings
Chandi Devi Ropeway ticket counter opens at 07:30 AM and remains open till 5:00 PM. Tickets are available from both Mansa Devi Mandir and Chandi Devi Mandir entrances. There is no online booking facility for Chandi Devi and Mansa Devi. The passenger has to stand in a queue for the tickets.
If the traveler wants to pay only for Chandi Devi ropeway then he/she have to pay 90 INR for a single way. This means that passengers can go up only by the ropeway while coming down the passengers will have to walk on foot. If you have to come down the ropeway then you have to pay Rs. 160 instead of Rs. 90. There is also a package of Chandi Devi and Mansa Devi ropeway, for which you have to pay 300 INR per person.

The nearest railway station from Chandi Devi Mandir is Haridwar Railway station which is 3 km away. Haridwar railway station is well combined with major cities like Lucknow, New Delhi, Ghaziabad, Dehradun, Rishikesh, Amritsar etc. From the railway station, the traveler can take an auto to reach Chandi Devi Temple.
There are 2 ways to reach the temple – By trek and by Ropeway. Walking distance is 3 km long from the road, which takes up to 40-50 min.
The other way is the Chandi Devi Udan Khatola ropeway service. Passengers are taken to the temple at a height of 200m from the road. The length of the ropeway is 750m and the height is 205m. From ropeway, one can see a beautiful view of the River Ganges and Haridwar City.
