Lakes in Uttarakhand
There are 5 types of lakes found in India. Tectonic lakes of Kashmir’s like Wular Lake, Volcanic lakes of Maharastra like Lonar Lake, Lagoon lakes like Orissa’s Chilka, Airborne lakes such as Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan, Lakes in Uttarakhand such as glacier lakes. Lakes in Uttarakhand are said to be made by glaciers.
The lakes in Uttarakhand have an important significance in themselves. Some rich with natural beauty and some has their own mythological significance.

Lakes in Kumaun
It is located in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand. This place is situated at a distance of 2 km from Kashipur. At this place, Guru Dronacharya taught his students the archery. A grand idol of Guru Drona is built on the banks of the pool.
Khurpa Tal lake
This lake is surrounded by 3 hills. This lake is located 10 km away from Nainital town. Its length is 1633 meters long and 5 km wide. Khurpatal is situated at an elevation of about 1638 m from sea level. Its size is similar to animal hoof. The watercolor of this lake is dark green.
Giri Tal lake
This place is located near Kashipur town. This lake is surrounded by temples of Shiva, Chamunda, Santoshi and Mansa Devi.
Jhilmil Tal lake
The diameter of this lake is 2 km and it is surrounded by Rhododendron and Pine trees. It is located in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. The color of the water of Jhilmil Tal is blue.
Tarag Tal is situated at a distance of 10 km from Chukhotia in Almora district of Uttarakhand. This lake is 1 km long and 500 meters wide. In summer, some part of this lake is dried, where locals cultivate. For the clearance of water in the lower part of Tarag Tal, 5 tunnels have been made.
This lake is located in the middle of Nainital town like a bowl. Nanital is a most famous lake in Uttarakhand. This lake is called Tri-Rishi Sarovar in Manaskhand of Skandapuran. The lake is discovered by P. Baron in 1841. It is believed that this lake is formed by the tears of Shiva’s wife Sati.
Due to having 9 corners in this lake, it is called Naukuchia Tal. This lake is the deepest lake of Kumaon area. This palace is situated at a distance of 4 km from Bhimtal.
This is the largest lake in the Kumaon region. The color of this lake is blue. The length of Bhimtal is 1674 m and the width is 447 m and the depth is 26 m. This is a triangle shape lake which is surrounded by mountains on the three sides.
This palace is located in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. The color of the water of this lake is dark black and white lotus flowers also bloom in it. The ashram of Swami Vivekanand is also located along this lake.
There were seven lakes in this place, some of which are now dry. The main lakes in the seven lakes are the Nal-Damayanti Tal, Lakshman Taal, Ram Sita Tal, Purna Taal, Panna Tal, Garuda Tal. All these lakes are connected with internal water streams.
Lakes in Garhwal
This lake is located in Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. It is situated at a distance of about 37 km from Buda Kedar. A beautiful island is also located in the middle of this lake.
This palace is located in Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. It is located in the north direction of Linga Tal. This lake is also called the lake of Godess.
This lake is located a few miles away from the lake.
This lake is situated at a distance of 20 km from Narsingh Tal. There are stone slates on the foothills of this lake, from which the image of a man’s statue appears.
This lake is situated just a few miles away from the Sehstra Tal of Tehri Garhwal. This lake always remains covered with snow.
This lake is located at an elevation of 4575 meters above sea level. This lake is composed of 2 bowl-shaped lakes, they are also called as the lake of the brother and sister.
This lake is located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. This lake is also known as Chaurabari Tal. Chaurabari Tal is located in the foothills of Kedarnath mountain ranges. In 1949, the bones of Gandhiji were buried in this Tal, hence this is called Gandhi Sarovar.
This circular rhythm is located at the height of 5200 in Chamoli district. It is also known as Kankali Tal. It is a famous tourist destination of Uttarakhand and is famous for trekking.
It is located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. This is the last stop of Nanda Devi Yatra. It is located at an altitude of 4000 m above sea level.
Hemkund / Lokpal
Guru Govind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, had done austerity on the side of this Tal. Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara is situated on the banks of this Tal. This Tal is surrounded by 7 mountains.
This palace is 21 km away from Badrinath. There are 3 corners of this rhythm and it is believed that Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh had done penance on all these three corners.
Devariyatal is one of the best camping destinations in Uttarakhand. One night camping is enough in Deoraital. This lake is situated at an altitude of 7000 feet above sea level. Deoria Tal trek is one of the popular and evergreen treks in Uttarakhand.
This rhythm is located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Colorful fishes are found in this Tal and it is surrounded by the tree of Betula utilis (Bhojpatra). This Tal is situated at an altitude of 3,024 meters above sea level.
This lake is located in Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. Kanatal is a village located on the Mussoorie-Chamba route. There used to be a lake which has now dried up. Despite this, there are lots of places of attraction here.
The water of this lake is clean and transparent and it is surrounded by the glaciers. This palace is famous for its divine beauty and is located 30 km from Gangotri.
Barnala Tal is located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is located at a distance of 4 km from Barsu village and serves as a campsite for Dayara Bugyal trekkers. A temple of Nagraj near Tal is also situated. Another small Tal is also situated at a distance of 100 meters from Barnala Tal.
It is located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. There is also a small temple situated on the bank of this lake. This lake is surrounded dense trees and it is an ideal place for camping and trekking. The trekking distance of Nachiketa Tal is 3 km.
This lake is located in Tehri Garhwal near the Buda Kedar. It is believed that here the Fairy comes to bath, and this is why this place is also known as Achri Tal.
