Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir Rishikesh

This Temple is located 28 km away from Lakshman Jhula, Rishikesh of Uttarakhand state of India. Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir is situated at an altitude of about 5500 feet above sea level, is a symbol of attraction. Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir has a beautiful depiction of sea churning (Samudra Manthan). The ancient Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is situated between the mountains named Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.

On the way to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, there is a temple called Dwadash Jyotirling. In this temple, symbols of 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva have been established.

There is a temple of Bhubaneswari Mata above Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir. This is the place where Bhagwati Mata had done penance in waiting for Shiva during Shiva penance.

According to mythology, when sea churning (Samudra Manthan) was occurring between the gods and the Demons (asuras), the Kaal Koot poison came out of the sea. Nobody was ready to take this poison at that time. In this time of crisis Lord Shiva put poison in his throat (Kanth). By drinking the poison, their throat turns blue. That is why Lord Shiva is also known as Neelkanth.

When the effects of poison began to grow on Lord Shiva’s body so they came into the hills of Manikoot. Seeing the beautiful scenes here, the desire for rest in their mind awakened. Lord Shiva did penance at this place for 60000 years and finished the effects of Kaalkoot poison. After that, Mata Parvati and all the deities and goddesses visit him. After this, Lord Shiva move towards Kailash Parvat with Mata Parvati from this place.

Under the banyan tree, Lord Shiva has done penance, a Peepal tree is located on that place today. At the same place, he established his throat as Pind for public welfare. A Prachin Dhuna is located in the courtyard of the temple. This is the same Dhuna from which Lord Shiva used to apply ash (Bhashm) on his body.

From time to time many sages came to this place and by meditating on the grace and blessings of Lord Shiva, achieved the accomplishment. That is why the fame of Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir is extended far and wide.

The traveler can visit Neelkanth Mandir throughout the year. Shiva devotees come in large numbers on this place in the month of Savan. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple Timing is from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM and the temple remain open all the days.

The nearest railway station from Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir is Rishikesh railway station. The station is well connected with Delhi, Lucknow, and other major cities. After reaching the railway station one can hire a cab from Rishikesh railway station to Neelkanth.

In order to reach Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir, the traveler can either go by car or by foot. Rishikesh to Neelkanth trek distance is 7 km from Lakshman Jhula and 20 km by car. Local transport like Maxx and taxies are available near the Lakshman Jhula. Rishikesh to Neelkanthtaxi fare is approx Rs. 130 and personal taxi charges are Rs. 700 approx.

If the travelers are traveling from Haridwar or Dehradun then they can hire a taxi from there. If they have their own vehicle then they can use google navigation to reach the temple. To reach the main temple, there is a walking distance of about 1 km from the parking area.
