Mythology of Haridwar
Before the Ramayana period, there was an ashram of Kapil Muni here, that’s why it was also known as “Kapila” in ancient time. Kapil Muni had cursed 60,000 sons of Sagar’s in this place.
Mayapur, Mayawati, Kupila, Shiva’s capital, the gate of the Gods are some ancient names of this place. According to Hindu religious beliefs, during the “Samudra Manthan”, when Indra’s son was taking Nectar vase (Amrit Kalash) away from the quarrel of Dev-Demons, then some of the drops from the Nectar vase (Amrit Kalash) fell on earth and today all the places became a religious place.
Bhartahari, elder brother of King Vikramaditya of Ujjain had done penance in this holy place. After his death, Vikramaditya had constructed Har Ki Pauri stairs in memory of his brother. Earlier it was known as Bharthari-ki-Pauri, Later it became known as ‘Har-Ki-Pauri’. Later, Akbar’s commander Maan Singh had repaired Har Ki Pauri stairs.
History of Haridwar
Haridwar was made a district on 28-12-1988, from 1988 till the formation of the Uttarakhand state, it came under Saharanpur Division. Chinese traveler Huen Tsang came to Haridwar city in 634 A.D. and named it Mo-Yu-Lo and named Ganga as Mahabhadra. In 1399 A.D. Taimur Lang also came here too. it has been called “Maya” in the editorship of Akbar’s historian Abul Fazal’s “Aina Akhbari”. During the Gorkha regime, this place became the slave’s sales center. Gandhi Ji came here in 1915-16 and later in 1927 A.D.

By road: One can easily reach this place by road from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Utter Pradesh, and other places of the country. Bus service is also available to this place from different parts of the country. One can also travel by his own vehicle to this place.
Air: Jolly Grant airport is 38 Km far from this place and serves as nearest airport to Haridwar. One can take flight from different available parts of the country. Taxi and cab are available outside the airport by which you can travel to Haridwar city.
Railway: Haridwar city is well connected by the railway line, it has its own Railway station. It is directly to some major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Dehradun, Varanasi etc.

This is the place where the droplets of holy nectar fell during the sea churning (Samudra Manthan). Resonant bells in Gangeshwar Mandir, Shri Bhairav Mandir, Bajrangbali Hanuman Temple, Shree Ganga Temple and the praise of Lord Shiva and mother Ganga encourages the devotees to believe in God.
Ganga Aarti is done every morning and evening in Har Ki Pauri. Aarti on the Ganges coast is considered as the most sacred task of Haridwar. It is good for everyone to see and hear it. This Ghat is situated near the Har Ki Pauri. This ghat is also known as Kusha Ghat. Pinddaan is done in this ghat by which the ancestors receive liberation. This place is the penance place of Lord Dattatreya. When Ganga arrived at this place, the Rishi Muni and Dattatreya were doing penance here. The Ganga has taken away the asanas of the sages with them. The asanas started to circulate at this place that is why this place is known as Kushavarta.
An ancient temple of Hanuman Ji is located near the Kushavarta Ghat. This temple is also known as Hanuman Ghat.
Haridwar was also known in ancient times by the name of Mayapuri. According to Garuda Purana, Ayodhya, Mathura, Kashi, Maya, Kanchi, Avantika, Mokshadayani. That is, Haridwar has its own importance in the ancient Mokshadayani Saptapuri of India. Therefore, this ancient temple of Maya Devi remains a symbol of faith. This temple is located in Shravan Nath Math near Fal Mandi Chowk, Haridwar. This temple was built around Vikrama Samvat in 1876 by the King of Nepal, inspired by Shri Lodhi Raj Shravan Nath Ji. In this temple, Pashupatinath’s Panchamukhi idol is seated. There is Chatra in this temple which is made up of 1.5 lakh Panch Mukhi Rudraksha. This temple is the confluence of anomalous art. Seeing this, a sense of happiness arises in the brain.
This place is located 1.5 km far from Har Ki Pauri. It is said that Mahabali Bhim had flooded the water by hitting his knee at this place in order to kill the thirst for mother Kunti. Ganga water comes in this Kund and hence its name was Bhimgoda.
Ancient Kali temple is located on the way to Bhimgoda. This temple was prepared during British rule. The statue of Kali is very beautiful in this temple.

Swami Vivekanand Park
This place is located near the main highway near Sarvanand Ghat. There is also a huge statue of Shiva in this park. The beauty of this huge statue in the night is even more amazing.
This temple is located in Sapt Sarovar. This temple is a modern building divided into 7 sections. At the bottom of this temple, Bharat Mata is located and on the top Lord Shiva is sitting. In addition, statues of Lord Krishna, Shri Ganesh, Mata Durga, Mother Saraswati, and other goddesses are present in other sections. There is also a lift to go to the upper section of this temple.
Sphatik Mani Shivaling
This temple is located near Bharat Mata Mandir.

Lal Mata Mandir

Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple
This ancient temple is situated between the green forest and the mountain. At this place, Devi Parvati had done penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. The ancient Gaurikund is located near this temple. The temple of Santoshi Mata is situated on the left side of Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple. Santoshi Mata temple is also very ancient and it is also known as Lal Mata Mandir.
Chandi Devi Mandir is the second important place for devotees in this context of places to visit in Haridwar.
The temple of Mata Chandi Devi is located on the peak of Nil Mountain on the east side of Ganga. There are 2 ways to go to Chandi Devi Temple – By foot and by trolly. Mata Anjana Devi Temple has located 100 meters away from Chandi Devi Mandir.
The ancient Kali temple is located on the way while returning from Chandi Devi. It is said that at this place, 1008 humans were sacrificed in the feet of the mother.
Satyugi Gauri Shankar Mandir
Satyugi Gauri Shankar Temple is located just a short distance from the Kali Temple. It is said that when Lord Shankar was going to the gate of King Daksha, he passed through here with his ghost and demon army.
Nileshwar Mahadev Mandir
This temple is also very important. This is the place from where Lord Shiva saw the Samudra Manthan. The view of this temple is very beautiful. An ancient Shivling is also established in this temple, whose Jalabhishek is beneficial.

Daksheshwar Mahadev temple
The Daksheshwar Mahadev temple is also mentioned in Shiv Purana. According to which Lord Shiva’s marriage was concluded with the daughter of King Daksha Prajapati. Lord Shiva’s natural Pindi in this mythical temple is very amazing. There is a huge tree in the courtyard of the temple. Here, people tie Kalawa in order to fulfill their wishes. All the entrances to this temple are named after the Vedas.
Shri Paardeshwar Mahadev Mandir
It is another temple of Lord Shiva located in Kankhal, Kankhal. Shivaling in this temple is made from 151 kilograms of pure mercury. There is a tree of Rudraksha in the courtyard of this temple. The pattern of 12 Jyotirlinga has been installed near this tree. Piolet Baba Mandir and Gita Mandir are also located near this temple.
Tilbhandeshwar Mahadev Mandir
Sesame oil is offered in this temple. It is believed that the existing Shivling in this temple looks 15 days bigger and 15 days smaller.
Other places to visit in Haridwar
This National Park extends from Haridwar to Dehradun to Pauri Garhwal districts. Animals like Sambhar, Barking Deer, Nilgai, and Wild Boar etc. can be seen here, although they cannot always be seen in one glance. The main hunter of this park is Tiger and Leopard. Hyena, jackal and Bengal fox are also seen in this park.
