Rudraprayag

Rudraprayag is a district of Uttarakhand state and its headquarter is located in Rudraprayag town. It is one of the Panch Prayags, located in Uttarakhand where there is a confluence of the Alaknanda and the Mandakini River. The ancient temple of Rudranath, Tungnath, and Kedarnath is situated in Rudraprayag district. All these temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva.

It is located at an elevation of 895 meters above from sea level. Rudraprayag is bordered by Tehri Garhwal in the west, Uttarkashi in the north, Pauri Garhwal in the south and Chamoli district in the east. Rudra Prayag is located 34 km far from Srinagar Garhwal.

On 18th September 1997, this district was established by merging some parts of Tehri, Pauri and Chamoli districts. Mandakini is the main river in this area.

Ukhimath: It is a small town located near Kedarnath, this place is 4300 feets above from sea level. According to the Mythology, the ancient name of this place was “Ushamtha”, which later became “Ukhimath”.

History Rudraprayag District

It is believed that Lord Shiva blessed Narada Muni at this place, after which he had held Rudra Avatar. In the Mahabharata period, its name was “Rudra vart”, that is why many Shiv temples are located at this place. The name of Rudraprayag has been named after Lord Shiva. 

How to reach Rudraprayag District

By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport at 159km far from Rudraprayag. Daily flights depart from Delhi to Dehradun. From Dehradun to Rudraprayag, one can easily be reached by bus or taxi.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Rishikesh from Rudraprayag, which is 140km far from Rudraprayag. Rishikesh and Rudraprayag are well connected by road, so one can easily be reached by bus or by taxi.

By Road: Rudraprayag, is located in NH58 of Uttarakhand and is well connected to major cities. From Rudraprayag, this highway divides into two parts towards one Badrinath and the other towards Kedarnath. One can reach Rudraprayag from Isbt Kashmiri Gate, Delhi or from Rishikesh and Dehradun.
