The Santala Devi Temple is located in Guljwadi village of Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. Santala Devi Mandir is located on a reef at an altitude of 2083 meters near Jaitunwala of Dehradun, Uttarakhand. It is situated on the right bank of the Noor River. There is a mountain near this temple which the goddess has given cruse that he will never be stable. At this place, the goddess Santala made her fort.

Santala Devi Temple Story

According to mythology, Santala Devi used to live in this place and he was the worshiper of Goddess Kali.

Once, Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb sent a marriage proposal to Maa Santala court. Santala Devi refuses the marriage proposal of Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb was not happy with this and he started marching from Delhi with his army to this place. Aurangzeb placed his camp at a place called Badshahi Bagh (located on the other side of the river).

Being located at the height, the Mughal army could not reach this place. But there was a secret route to reach this place, whose guard was the brother of Santala Devi. The Mughals had come to know about this route and they all started moving towards the fort and the war have been started between Mata and Mughals. When the Mughal army started to enter the fort in larger amounts. At the same time, Mother Bhagwati and his brother sit on the state of meditation.

It is said that as soon as Mother Durga sit on meditation position at that time light from the sky arose and the entire Mughal army became blind. After this, the Santala Devi and her brother got converted into rock statue. Slowly people started to know about this place and today this place is the center of a major faith. The devotees gather in the temple on Saturday, because on Saturdays the goddess Santana and her brother were transformed into the stone statues.

British times story of Santala Devi Temple

In the British period, there was an officer named Colonel Shakespear. One day the colonel asked where my soldiers went up there. Then a soldier told him the story of the temple. The Colonel did not have any child and therefore the curiosity to go to the temple arise in his mind. It is said that within a year, his wife gives birth to a child. After this Colonel named his son in this temple along with Hindu rituals. He named his son Devi Singh Shakespeare.

Every day the temple open at 6:00 AM  and close at 7:00 PM.

How to reach Santala Devi Temple

Santala Devi Temple has located 13 km from Dehradun railway station and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, which is located just 37 kilometers far from this place. After reaching the airport or Railway station the traveler can hire a cab.

The distance between Santala Devi Temple and Dehradun is only 15 km which can be easily covered by city bus or taxi. A direct bus is available from Dilaram Chowk. Finally, you have to cover a 1 km distance by foot.
