Tapkeshwar Mandir Dehradun 

Tapkeshwar Mahadev Mandir is located in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, India. This temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. Tapkeshwar Mandir is located on the banks of Tons river. The ancient name of this river was Devdhara or Tamasa. On the other side of the river, the temples of other Goddesses are also established. The sanctum of this temple is situated in a cave. To reach the sanctum from the main gate, devotees have to descend the stairs.

Once the devotees enter the sanctum, a statue of Ganesh Ji is established on the left side. After this idol of Maa Durga, Radha-Krishna, Hanuman Ji, Kal Bhairav is established on the temple premises. After this, the devotees arrive in the main premises. There is a natural Shivalinga on the main premises of the temple. The roof of the cave is made of limestone rock. Water is constantly dripping from the roof of the cave, that is why this temple is named “Tapkeshwar”.

Tapkeshwar Temple History

Tapkeshwar Mandir is described in Kedarkhand of Skanda Purana. In this cave, Lord Shiva used to meditate. Shri Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple is a great pilgrim center of the world’s famous yogi Dronacharya, the great archery teacher of the Mahabharata era, the Guru of the Kauravas and the Pandavas.

The description of Shivling is mentioned in the name of Deveshwar and Tapeshwar for about 6 thousand years in Skand Puran and Kedar Khand. In this cave, Guru Dronacharya received the knowledge of archery from Lord Shiva after penance. Since then, Dehradun city became known as “Dron Nagari”.

The son of Drona, Ashwathama, stood up to one foot and practiced penance for six months to please Lord Shiva in order to get milk in this cave. On the full moon day, the penance of Ashwathama was completed and the milk was dripped on Shivling, then the Ashwathama took milk from the feet of Shiva and finish his hunger, thirst and at the same time also received a boon of immortality from Lord Shiva.  With the introduction of Kalyug, the milk is turned into water. At present, the devotees do Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva and get their desire fulfilled.

There is a super waterfall around the temple, the water here has medicinal properties. This beautiful temple attracts hundreds of tourists from Dehradun and surrounding areas every year. A big festival is organized on Shivratri day around the Tapkeshwar Mandir of Dehradun.  A large number of people participate in the fair on the occasion of Shivratri.

Tapkeshwar Mandir remains crowded every day. But on every Monday, there is a large number of devotees come here for Jalabhishek and worshiping. Tapkeshwar Mahadev makeup is done with kind of flowers and leaves before the regular evening arti. The appearance of makeup varies every time. On every Sunday and Thursday, Tapkeshwar Mahadev holds a special makeup called Tapeshwar. This is the form on which Shivaji had appeared to Acharya Drone. Rudrakshmay makeup of Lord Shiva is made on both Trayodashi of every month. This Rudrakshmay avatar of Tapkeshwar is called Deveshwar Shiv.

How to reach Tapkeshwar Mandir

Tapkeshwar Mandir is located on Garhi Cantt Road and 32 km from Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun, 9 km from ISBT Dehradun and 7.5 kilometers from Railway Station Dehradun. This temple is located at a distance of 6.5 km from Clock Tower, Dehradun. From ISBT, railway station or from the airport, the temple can be reached by taxi, city bus or three wheelers (Vikram/Auto).
