Uttarkashi District is a large area wise district of Uttarakhand state which is located on the northern boundary of India. It is also known as “Kashi of North” and is also called “Soumya Kashi”. Uttarkashi’s ancient name used to be “Barahat”. Among the four virtuous shrines of Hindu religion, Gangotri and Yamunotri are situated in Uttarkashi district.

Uttarkashi is situated at an altitude of 1158 meters above sea level on the bank of Bhagirathi River. Most of the areas here are hilly and stony. Bhagirathi is one of the largest and holiest rivers in the district. Uttarkashi is a very well-known place for visiting the attractions. It is also known as “Shivanagiri”. Many temples and ashrams are also present in the city.

History of Uttarkashi

The history of Uttarkashi is coming from the Mahabharata era. In this region, tribes like Khasas, Uttara Kurus, Kartas used to exist in ancient times. The Vedic language was very famous in the rest of the region. People used to come from far away to gain knowledge of Vedic languages and speech learning. According to the Mahabharata, Jada Bharata, who was a great sage, practiced penance in Uttarkashi. Some part of this area was under the Panwar Dynasty.

By flight – Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport from Uttarkashi. It is 162 km away from Uttarkashi.

By rail. The nearest railway station is Rishikesh, which is 145 kilometers away from Uttarkashi.

By Road – It is well linked by road to Haridwar, Dehradun, Rishikesh. By booking the taxi or by bus, Uttarkashi town can easily be reached.

Yamunotri – It is 125 km far from Uttarkashi. This place is the origin of holy river the Yamuna. It is one of the four dhams of Uttarakhand.

Hersil – It is located at a distance 73km far from Uttarkashi. It is located on Gangotri Highway.

Nachiketa Tal – It is 28 km far from Uttarkashi. A temple is located on the side of this lake.
